History of the Property:
In the early 1920’s entrepreneur Harold
Klingler initiated the dig of his gravel and sand pit so as to
provide such materials to build new and expand existing highways in
Paulding and surrounding counties. The workmen were allowed to stay
on the property during the digging season and lived in Klingler’s
bunkhouse (such bunkhouse, with its knotty pine walls, still exists
as the living room portion of today’s lodge).
When the gravel portion of the pit started
filling with water, Mr. Klingler envisioned his next opportunity and
used the remaining sand on the property to create a beach and picnic
area. He constructed a bath and shelter house from native timber.
June 16, 1940 was opening day at “Klingler’s Beach” and the
admission charge on opening day was 10 cents! For the next 20+
years Klingler’s Beach became “the” swimming & fishing hole and
picnic spot for residents from Paulding and surrounding counties in
northwest Ohio. Klingler’s Beach closed its doors to the public in
the late 1960’s and the property became the personal residence and
farm of a decedent of Mr. Klingler.
Reopened as Lazy Island Lake in April, 2006,
this vacation getaway destination is now a getaway lodge off the
beaten path!
